Buttermere Shepherd’s Meet
This meet usually takes place on the last Sunday in October. The venue is in the centre of the village, where it started 41 years ago, in the field adjoining Croft House Café, which sponsors the fell races.
The Meet moved back to Buttermere three years ago for financial reasons and reverted to a simple Shepherd’s Meet, where herdwick sheep from the adjoining parishes only are shown and working shepherd’s dogs from any area.
The fell races are organised by the Cumberland Fell Runners.
Entry is free. Visitors are welcome to come and enjoy a traditional Lakeland event harking back to the days when sheep, which had strayed off their heaf on the common, were walked to a central point, in this case the Fish Hotel. They were then walked home their owners, who had enjoyed a good meal and singsong.
