Almost all the roads in Cumbria are looked after by Cumbria County Council, which operates a system of Highways Stewards to keep an eye on roads and arrange repairs where needed. There is also an online system whereby road problems can be reported, see link here.

Local bus services
These are operated by Stagecoach and you can find all their routes and timetables here. The only regular local service, albeit Summer only, is the Honister Rambler service linking Keswick, Borrowdale, Buttermere, Lorton and Whinlatter from (roughly) the beginning of April to the end of October. The X4/X5 service runs from Penrith-Workington via Keswick and Cockermouth.

The “Village Wheels” service is organised by Cumbria County Counciland is for residents of Buttermere, Lorton and Loweswater for travel into Cockermouth, but on Wednesdays and Fridays only. The minibus leaves Buttermere at 10.08, Loweswater at 10.15 and Lorton at 10.20 arriving in Cockermouth at 10.30. The return minibus departs from Cockermouth at 12.00. Prices for a single journey are £2.50 from Buttermere, £2.00 from Loweswater and £1.25 from Lorton. You need a SmartCard to use the service and these can be obtained from Joanne or Abby on 0845 602 3786. Once you have your card, you phone the above number by 12 noon to book a seat for the following day’s service.

Village Wheels is thus rather similar to the Rural Wheels scheme, which is already operated by Cumbria County Council. More details on this can be found here. There is a useful listing of bus timetables on the Cumbria County Council website here. For other Stagecoach bus services in Cumbria, see here and there is general information on public bus services throughout the UK here.
